Hiring out chemical applications is especially worthwhile because mistakes are costly and some products require a license to apply.
For a standard quarter-acre Southeast Texas yard, a self-propelled gas mower with a 21–22 inch deck is the most practical choice. For half-acre or larger lots, a riding mower or zero-turn mower saves significant time. For small yards under 3,000 sq ft, a battery-powered mower is a viable option. Look for a mower with a mulching capability — it's better for the lawn and eliminates bagging. Brands like Honda, Toro, and Husqvarna have strong reputations for durability.
Start with a soil test (available through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service) to understand your soil's nutrient levels and pH.
